November 6- Joseph Clark endorsed by several labor unions, Americans for Democratic Action, and the Philadelphia Inquirer defeats Republican Daniel A. Poling by a margin of 124,700 votes. John Coltrane buys house at 1511 North 33rd Street, Philadelphia. This is his main residence until 1958 and he continues to use this home when he is playing in Philadelphia. Coltrane dies in 1967. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1999.

October 4, 1953, Bill Haley & The Comets’s Crazy Man, Crazy becomes the first rock and roll song heard on national television during William Inge’s “Glory in the Flower” episode of the CBS series Omnibus. This program featured Philadelphian Edward Binns, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy and James Dean in a role similar to his James Stark character in Rebel Without a Cause.
